THE SCENARIO
I’m giving birth. I know I had researched all the options, and yet the doctor comes in and tells me that I have to get my waters broken.
Then I remember what I was taught in the class I took. As the pain dissipates I remember that I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do.
I look at the doctor and shake my head. “I appreciate your advice. But for now, I think I’m going to hold off. Do you think it’s important that I have my waters broken? If so, why?”
THE EXPLANATION
You see in that scenario right there, she discovered that she had just harnessed the power of her birth plan. A birth plan can be seen as a frivolous thing.
9 out of 10 people think it’s crazy to plan for something that is unpredictable. Many things can go wrong, and so it’s a good reason to expect that.
But why shouldn’t you plan? Why shouldn’t you learn what you do want and what you don’t?
Why shouldn’t you understand that under these terms its important that you do it?
It’s why I tell people how important it is to go into a birth with a plan. Or a notion of it.
I’ve had multiple clients not go in with a plan and the little hopes that they wanted, flopped, and ended up with traumatic birth situations.
So why don’t you want to harness the power in your birth?
Having a birth plan is simply… planning. Research the options available to you for the situations that you might have.
Planning a homebirth? Make a plan for a transfer to the hospital. What if?
That’s why birth “planning” scares people. Because you can’t plan for a birth like you can a trip to Disney World.
But that’s why new names have come around over the years.
